Who Are Digital Nomads?

Digital nomads work online while travelling or living abroad. The lifestyle is location-independent and internet-based. Remote jobs replace the need for a fixed office. Many move between countries using flexible visa options. One of the main challenges that digital nomads face is finding a suitable country with a feasible option to obtain long-term visa. Having a long-term visa or residence permit is much more secure than having to rely on a tourist visa or visa-free arrangement. Though highly sought after, especially in developed countries like the USA and EU, long-term visas are often difficult to obtain.

Popular destinations for digital nomads offer fast wi-fi and safe environment. Jobs include software development, design, marketing, and writing. Some teach online or offer coaching services. Others manage e-shops, projects, or do virtual assistance. Clients or employers are usually located abroad. The goal is freedom, flexibility, and income from anywhere.

The Bulgarian digital nomad visa

The Bulgarian digital nomad visa was first introduced in the Bulgarian Foreigners Law on 27.06.2025. The law stipulates three types of digital nomads and defines what the conditions are to obtain a digital nomad visa. Bearing in mind that Bulgaria is full member of the Schengen area, the digital nomads in the country enjoy visa-free travel to all other Schengen member states. This, along with the clear legal definitions, make the Bulgarian digital nomad visa one of the best in the whole EU.
